Meta Quest 3 controller disconnections: antenna flex cable repair

Symptom: Meta Quest 3 loses controller connection when they are occluded

On this Meta Quest 3, the controllers worked while they remained in the headset cameras’ field of view. When an object covered them or they moved outside the cameras’ view, the connection became unstable or dropped. This can resemble a tracking, pairing or controller fault, but the symptom alone does not identify the failed component.

With a VR headset, it is important to distinguish a software issue from a break in the hardware communication path. If the dropout repeats under similar conditions, pairing the controllers again may not address the underlying cause.

Headset inspection and diagnosis

We opened the headset and inspected its internal assemblies. Diagnostics revealed a physically damaged flexible cable connecting the antenna section to the main board. When this connection is compromised, communication can become unreliable depending on controller position and the conditions in which the system detects them.

The fact that a controller disappears from the cameras’ view does not by itself prove that the cameras are faulty. In this case, the inspection pointed to the antenna assembly and its connection to the main board, not visible damage to the external sensors.

A torn antenna assembly flex cable

We found a torn flex cable linking the antenna section to the main board. This kind of damage may follow an impact or excessive pressure. It can also happen during an earlier disassembly if a cable is accidentally pulled, damaged or pinched by the housing. Without clear evidence, it is not possible to determine exactly when or how the tear occurred.

Changing settings or repeating the pairing process would not repair the damaged connection. The cable needed to be restored and routed carefully during reassembly.

Flex cable restoration and functional check

At our service centre, we restored the damaged flex cable between the antenna assembly and the main board. We then reassembled the headset carefully so the cable would not be bent sharply or trapped by the housing again.

After the repair, the Meta Quest 3 worked as it should and the controller connection behaved normally in the situation that had previously caused dropouts. The repair addressed the specific fault found during diagnostics instead of replacing parts without evidence.

When does a Meta Quest 3 need repair?

If a Meta Quest 3 repeatedly loses its controllers, tracking lags, the connection drops during movement or the issue remains after restarting and pairing again, the cause may involve software, a controller, the antenna or a board connection. Both the headset and controllers should be assessed before parts are replaced.

Does a controller disappearing from view mean the cameras are broken?

Not necessarily. Cameras and tracking are only part of the chain; the controller, antenna, flex cable or board connection may also be involved. The headset needs inspection.

Can you tell whether a drop or previous repair caused the tear?

Not without supporting evidence. We confirmed the damaged flex cable, but the exact time and cause of the damage could not be established reliably.

Will pairing the controllers again fix it?

It may help with a software issue, but it cannot restore a torn or damaged flex cable. If the connection continues to drop, the headset and controllers should be diagnosed.
