What to do immediately after a phone gets into water
A practical checklist of the first steps after water contact, and why time really matters here.
After water exposure, the most important rule is not to apply power. Trying to turn the device on, charge it or heat it may worsen a short circuit and accelerate corrosion.
If possible, switch the device off as quickly as you can, remove any case, take out the SIM tray and avoid shaking it unnecessarily. Extra movement may only push moisture deeper into sensitive areas.
Popular home tips such as rice, hair dryers or strong heat rarely help the way people hope. They create the illusion of action, but they do not remove residue, corrosion or trapped moisture under shields and connectors.
The earlier proper diagnostics and cleaning begin, the better the chance of saving more components and lowering the total recovery cost. That matters even more if the liquid was not clean water but something with salt, sugar or household chemicals.
Even if the device turns on after the incident, that does not mean the inside is safe. The decisions made in the first hours after liquid contact often determine whether the repair remains limited or turns into a larger recovery case later on.
